A Story Within the Story

There’s something special about reading a novel by an author you feel you already “know”… before you’ve read one of their books. Whether it’s through “meeting” them via their newsletter, receiving recommendations from friends and authors or following them on social media, It’s amazing how you can relate to a relative stranger through the snippets they share and the brief glimpses into their world.

This was my experience before picking up Reverie by Drew Taylor.

I’ve followed Ms Taylor online for a while, enjoyed her posts, and have occasionally interacted, so I went into this story confident I’d like her writing. I wasn’t wrong.

Reverie is a contemporary Christian romance, but not quite in the way you might expect. While it delivers on romance and faith, it also leans into something a little more real, more layered and a touch edgier than the genre often explores.

Esme and Noah’s story revolves around amnesia, but it’s not your typical “lost memory” trope. Without giving too much away, there’s a unique story-within-a-story element that adds intrigue and depth. It kept me engaged not just in what was happening, but in how everything would come together.

Yes, this is a faith-based, closed-door romance. However, it also acknowledges something we don’t often talk about openly in Christian fiction: we’re human. We’re created with emotions, desires, and complexities that don’t disappear because we have faith. I laughed aloud at some of Noah’s cheeky, innuendo-laced comments because they felt so familiar. They echoed real-life conversations that aren’t always reflected on the page and added a layer of authenticity that I appreciated.

Beyond those lighter moments, Reverie explores deeper themes: heartache, hard realities, soaring highs and lows that hit hard. The emotional range felt genuine, not polished or idealised. For a first read from Drew Taylor, this one left me thinking long after the final page. It’s refreshing to find a story that sits comfortably within Christian fiction while also stretching the edges of what this can look like.

If you enjoy romance with depth, honest conversations, and a slightly different take on familiar tropes, Reverie is well worth adding to your TBR pile.
