Some fortnights look very different from what we plan, and this past one has certainly been that.
Normally, I’d be sitting to write a book review (or two), but the past couple of weeks have been busy and unusual in ways I didn’t expect. Reading took a back seat, and that’s okay.
I only read two complete books this fortnight, one being my novella, A Sun-Drenched Christmas. I reread it to reacquaint myself with a few characters as I prepare to write again, which was actually a lovely reminder of why I enjoyed telling that story. I also started a NetGalley book but, for the first time in seventy reads, chose not to review it. Sometimes a book isn’t the right fit, and this one reminded me how fortunate I am with my usual selections.
Behind the scenes, I’ve also been knee-deep in the practical side of author life. I’ve been migrating my author newsletter from one carrier to another, which meant hours of backing things up, resetting systems, and hoping I’ve done everything carefully and well so readers continue to receive updates without disruption.

Last week, however, my attention was firmly elsewhere as the Longwood bushfire unfolded. We had family directly affected, which quickly shifted priorities. My two youngest girls were staying with my parents when the fire broke out not far from them, so Mum evacuated with the girls and spent several days with us. Mr Wonderful’s mum also evacuated, and for good reason. Her back fence burned, and the school property behind her home was lost.
It was a confronting reminder of how quickly circumstances can change. I constantly fought the urge to check the VicEmergency app every few minutes as the fire spread. In the midst of it all, I’m deeply thankful to God for His protection and for keeping our family, their homes, and their properties safe. That sense of gratitude has lingered long after the immediate danger passed.
By the time I write again, my girls will have just started another school year. I’m hopeful the return of familiar routines will open up space not only for more reading but also for writing. I’m looking forward to settling back into creative rhythms and seeing where the next season of storytelling leads.
Until next time, stay safe.
