If you’ve been here a while, you’ll know I’m a long-time fan of Pepper Basham’s stories. Whether she’s leading readers to sojourn in the Blue Ridge Mountains, penning delicious modern romcoms, or crafting swoony epistolary romances, Pepper Basham’s signature blend of humour, heart, and hope always shines through.
Now she’s turned her talents to the Regency era, and I couldn’t be happier.

Sense and Suitability is a sweet, witty, second-chance romance that quickly became one of my new favourites. Emmeline and Simon’s story is filled with heartache but balanced well with humorous notes and those unmistakably Basham-esque moments where you smile one page and sigh the next.
Emme Lockhart is a heroine brimming with quiet strength, creativity, and secrets. Two years earlier, she was on the verge of being proposed to by Simon Reeves… until he disappeared without a word. Now he’s returned to society, newly titled and intent on finding a wealthy wife, so Emme’s tidy little world unravels.
I loved the depth of Emme’s character, with her blend of innocence and vulnerability as she navigated the awkward and sometimes comical reappearance of her first love. As for her secret life as an author, it might’ve been scandalous in Regency society, but this author cheered her for her bravery and enjoyed the added depth her secret created.
Then there’s Simon. Oh, Simon. Once I heard his side of the story (and not just Emme’s 😉), I was completely won over. A man willing to own his mistakes, face his past, and fight for what truly matters? True hero material. Simon is more than worthy of the “Book Boyfriend” title! Add in his rambunctious and adorable younger siblings, a frog named Blast (yes, really!), and Basham’s signature lively banter, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a sweet Regency romance.
Sense and Suitability reminded me why I adore second-chance love stories: the ache of regret, the courage to forgive, and the beauty of rediscovered hope. Pepper Basham once again delivers a story that makes you laugh, swoon, and reflect on grace in the most delightful way.
If you love Jane Austen or stories that blend wit and warmth with swoony romance, this is one for your shelf.
Until next time,
